GIE licence holder requirements in poker machine venues

Poker machine venues must have at least one gaming industry employee (GIE) licence holder on site when poker machines are in operation. This is different to a Responsible Gambling Officer (RGO). An RGO must always be present in the poker machine area when it is open to patrons.

A GIE licence is required for anyone working for:

  • a venue operator
  • the monitoring licensee
  • a gaming machine services provider

and as part of their role:

  • accesses the logic area of a poker machine. The logic area is a cabinet with its own locked door, containing important electronic parts that can greatly affect how the machine works
  • possesses keys to unlock the logic area of a poker machine (or has the authority to provide the keys to others with a GIE licence)
  • accessing a restricted monitoring part, like a jackpot interface board
  • supervises a GIE licence holder by directing or overseeing their performance or operation when doing tasks mentioned above. For example, this would apply when a new GIE licence holder is being trained to reset the poker machine or access the logic area.

GIE licence holders must always wear their licence while on duty.

Not all gaming attendants require a GIE licence, but venues may choose to have multiple GIE licence holders on shift at any time.

Visit the GIE webpage(opens in a new window) for more information.
